Dorothy Edith Cox, 94, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Edith passed away peacefully at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center with her family by her side.
Edith was born January 14, 1919 in Sullivan County and lived in the Fordtown Community. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved to cook and her greatest joy was preparing Christmas dinners by herself each year. This was her gift to the family.
Edith was known for her humor and shared funny stories with many people. She was a big fan of the University of Tennessee Lady VOLS Basketball Team and seldom missed watching a game on TV. She also loved riding through the mountains and viewing the scenery, especially in the fall.
Edith was a cafeteria employee for many years at Miller Perry Elementary and Colonial Heights Middle Schools. She was a member of West Colonial Hills Baptist Church. She enjoyed her senior group and the many trips they took together.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Perry M. Cox; an infant twin daughter, Kathyrn Kay; parents, Tom and Katie Zimmerman; brothers, Howard and Carson Zimmerman; sisters, Lucille Mitchell and Lovella Wilson; sons-in-law, Jim Speck and Larry Bishop; and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Cox.
Edith is survived by three daughters and one son, Alice Bishop, Tom Cox (Vickie), Sylvia Ferguson (Russell), and Kay Speck. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one cousin, June Hamilton.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service, with Preacher Russell Ferguson and Pastor Wes Rankin officiating, will follow immediately after visitation.
Special music will be provided by Patty Quarles and Alan Cox, grandson.
The graveside service will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edith's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
The immediate family would like to thank the staff on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Wilcox Hall for their devoted service and compassion in taking such wonderful care of our mother.
