Dorothy Smith Crosswhite, 88, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 17, 2007, at Church Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center following a period of declining health.

Dorothy was born on May 2, 1919, in San Dimas, California, the first daughter of the late James E. and Laurie Feathers Smith. While a teenager she moved with her family to Piney Flats, Tennessee, to live on the family farm. She worked several years in retail customer service, first at J. Fred Johnson Department Store, and later at the Miller and Hess Department Stores in Kingsport. She retired from Hess Department Store.

Dorothy was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Kingsport. She will always be remembered for her unselfish love and compassion for others. She loved flowers and bird-watching, and was a talented watercolor artist. Her paintings are cherished possessions in the homes of family members and friends, where they are proudly displayed.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Worley C. Crosswhite; her eldest daughter, Doris J. Taylor; sister Gladys Smith; and brothers Ernest Smith and Laverne Smith.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Crosswhite and friend Pam Robinson, of Telford, daughter and son-in-law Anna and Jim White of Kingsport; grandchildren Karen Ratliff and husband Randy of Kingsport, LTJG USN James Andrew Andy White, of Pacific Grove, California, Kelly Guntrum of Blountville, Mindy Johnson and husband Jeff of Kingsport, Jennifer Turner and husband John, Kingsport, Julia Turner of Jonesborough, Will Taylor and wife Shawna, and George Taylor III; great-grandchildren Kari Ratliff Lucas and husband James, of Clarksville, Indiana, Mitchell Guntrum, Sean Guntrum, McKayla Johnson, Emily Lawson, Savanna Johnson, William Johnson, Eli Johnson, Ashley Turner, Breanna Turner, and Gage Taylor; sisters Alice Young of Huntsville, Alabama, Louise High of Louisville, Kentucky, and Beulah Baird of the Eastern Star Community; brothers Rev. James Smith of Johnson City and Herman Smith of Piney Flats; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 Tuesday evening at First Christian Church, 106 E. Charlemont Avenue, Kingsport. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 with Hugh Thompson, Minister and Minister Matt Hickman officiating. Burial services will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park, Kingsport, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, where Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband.

David Baird, Mitchell Guntrum, Sean Guntrum, Jeff Johnson, Randy Ratliff, Rick Smith, John Turner, Richard Young, and Will Taylor will serve as pallbearers.
