Dorothy "Dot" Evelyn Dorton Hixson, passed away Monday night, November 15, 2010, at Preston Place II after an extended illness with Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Russell County, VA., Dot was a loving, caring mother. She was a graduate of Sullivan High School and attended East Tennessee State Teacher College. Dot was employed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Holston Defense, Area B. She was also a buyer for Park-Belk department store for several years, a homemaker active in Girl Scouts and P.T.A., then employed as a surgical assistant for Dr. Joseph Pope for 20 years.
After retirement, Dot raised standard bred horses and had a passion for all animals. She was always active in life; her latest work was as a hostess at Allendale Mansion in Kingsport for 10 years. Dot was a member of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church and Women of the Moose Lodge.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents: Robert F. Dorton and Mace Caroline Fortner Dorton; and four brothers: Ralph Cecil Dorton, Jack Curtis Dorton, Arthur Guy Dorton and Stanley Dorton.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Debbie Waggoner and husband Buddy of Kingsport; two brothers: Bobby Howard Dorton of Limestone and Larry Charlie Dorton of Kingsport; three sisters: Juanita Dorton Short, Naomi Vines, and Martha Ann Dorton all of Kingsport along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2010 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m in the Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport chapel with the The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. Music will be provided by Carla Karst. Burial will follow Oak Hill Memorial Park.
