Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Dean Andes passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was born March 18, 1922 in Mound City, MO. Jerry served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from the University of Missouri and was in its first graduating veterinary class. Dr. Andes was one of the first veterinarians in Kingsport. He and his wife, Margie moved to Kingsport in 1952. He and Dr. Tyler Young founded Young-Andes Veterinary Hospital which later became Andes-Straley Veterinary Hospital. He continued to practice until his retirement in 1988. Jerry was a member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. Andes of Mound City, MO; brother, Leroy Andes of Mound City, MO; and his loving in-laws, A.C. and Frona Slemp of Big Stone Gap, VA.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margie Slemp Andes; son, Dr. Gary Andes and wife, Andrea of Kingsport; daughter, Terri Andes Rice and husband, Frank of Kingsport; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Betty Kamber of Kingsport; grandchildren, Ashley Andes Cooper and husband, Devlin of Macon, GA, Alexander Andes of Kingsport, Dean and Caroline Rice of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Waverly Road Presbyterian Church. A Celebration of Life will begin at 3 pm with The Rev. Dr. Daniel S. Clark officiating.
