Dr. Gerald Ray Lappin, died on May 26, 2018 at Wexford House at the age of 99. Born in 1919 in Caro, Michigan, class valedictorian in 1937, he graduated from Alma College in 1941 and received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Northwestern University in 1946.
He brought his family to the Kingsport area in 1951 from Tucson, Arizona where he had taught chemistry at the University of Arizona, to work for the research laboratory of Tennessee Eastman Co., retiring after three decades of service.
For several years, he headed the Bays Mountain Park Planetarium Volunteers, writing and presenting educational planetarium programs, as well as contributing articles to several science periodicals and teaching local classes on telescope-making. He was also an amateur radio enthusiast and member of the Kingsport Amateur Radio Club, and for 74 years, a member of the American Chemical Society. His beloved wife, Virginia H. Lappin, whom he married in 1945, preceded him in 2015. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Lappin and his wife Joice, and by his daughter Linda Lappin-Baldassarre and her husband, Sergio Baldassarre.
