Gordon Vidmar DDS, devoted husband and father of two, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 18, 2016 with his wife by his side. He had battled dementia for the last several years of his life. Gordon was born in Pueblo, Colorado on October 8, 1935.
Gordon received his DDS degree from Creighton University in 1959. He then served as Captain, US Army Dental Corps Support at the Nike Missile Defense site in Pittsburgh, PA. before starting his private dental practice in Pueblo, CO. It was there that he met and married his wife of over 52 years, Shirley. A grant from the University of Michigan allowed him to receive his Masters of Public health degree and pursue a career in public health. He and his family resided in the Washington, DC area from 1971 until 1986 where he held many titles working for the Public Health Service. In 1981 he took a position as Associate Chief for Dentistry with the Veterans Administration. In 1986, with both children in college, he and Shirley returned to Colorado where he held the position of Chief, Dental Service and Director of the General Practice Residency Program at the VA Medical Center in Denver. He retired in January 1997 and shortly thereafter moved to Kingsport, TN. Gordon's retirement years were filled with planning trips and travelling abroad, mostly by train, his favorite way to travel. Gordon loved his God, Country and Family. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher Joseph and Mildred O'Toole Vidmar.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Kay Vidmar; daughter, Dina M. Sauer and husband, Robert of Sparta, NJ; son, Greg G. Vidmar and wife, Melissa of Blacksburg, VA; 2 grandsons, Ryan Sauer and Christopher Sauer; brother, Dr. Dennis J. Vidmar and wife, Joan of Pueblo, Colorado ; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:30 - 11:00 am at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Gate City, VA. The funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am with Father Tim Drake officiating.
