Dr. H. Jackson Whitt, 84, Kingsport, died midnight Friday, January 4, 2013 at Holston Valley Medical Center while surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
Jack was born in Appalachia, VA. He was a graduate of Milligan College and attended East Tennessee State University for graduate studies. He went to the University of Virginia, graduating from the Medical School in 1960. After his internship, Jack returned to Kingsport where he practiced until his retirement in 1990.
Jack so loved the church. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and attended Cedarview Presbyterian for the past 20 years.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving in the U. S. Army in the Seventh Infantry where he received the Bronze Star with a V for valor.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John Walter Whitt and Elsie Lee Freeman Whitt; a daughter, Carol Mildred Whitt; three sisters, Helen Garner, Virginia Mabry and Mildred Whitt; and two brothers, John Walter Whitt, Jr. and James Dwight Whitt.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Whitt of the home; daughter, Kathryn Visneski and husband Michael of Kingsport; son, Tom Whitt and wife Pam of Yuma, VA; and seven grandchildren, Kristen and husband Andy, Thomas, Tiffany, Mary, Kaitlyn, Ben and Sarah.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Cedarview Presbyterian Church. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday with Rev. David Sims officiating and Dennis Spurgeon will deliver the eulogy.
Military honors will follow at the church conducted by the American Legion Posts No. 3/265.
