Dr. Lee H. Miller, age 91, of Kingsport passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Life Care Center of Gray. He was born on December 7, 1922 in Wilkes Barre, PA and was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Edward and Ruth Hutter Miller, as well as his first wife, Josephine Darding Miller.
Dr. Miller was a Lutheran by faith and received his BS degree from Muhlenberg, a Lutheran college in Allentown, PA. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He received a second degree (Doctor of Industrial Medicine) from the Institute of Industrial Health at the University of Cincinnati. He served in the U.S. Army as Chief Industrial Medical Officer at the Army Chemical Center in Edgewood, MD.
He had a distinguished medical career over the years, including serving as Assistant Medical Director of Bell Telephone of Penn. in Philadelphia, Director of the Clinical Division Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Medical Director of Proctor & Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio, and finally, Director of the Laboratory of Industrial Medicine at Eastman Kodak in Kingsport. He later retired there as a staff physician after 19 years of service.
Dr. Miller was an active member of the Kingsport Senior Center and the American Legion Post #3 of Kingsport. He was a former member of the American Medical Association, the Industrial Medical Association, and the American Academy of Occupational Medicine. He was also proud of being bestowed the honor of Kentucky Colonel.
He spent some of his happiest years working on his mountain farm in the rural Greene Co. community of Lost Mountain. He fondly referred to it as "Therapy Hills". He also enjoyed square dancing, and was an avid gardener. He loved telling his family of his travels and offering advice. He will long be remembered for his passion for life, as an advocate for preventative care, and for his promotion of health and wellness.
Dr. Miller is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carole Carter Miller; son, Douglas Lee Miller of Boise, Idaho; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Cheri and Mike Horton of Rogersville, and Joey and Chris Compton of Greeneville; step-grandchildren, Brooke Compton Davis, Seth Compton, Connor Linkous, Wes Horton, and Chelsea Horton; sister-in-law, Betty McNeese of Greeneville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jimmy and DeAnna Carter of Greeneville; former brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and Marjorie Darding of Greenville, Ohio; former sister-in-law, Ida Mae Stewart of Greenville, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and friends also survived.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 from 1-3:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, Tennessee. A memorial service will follow with Dr. Randall Pressnell officiating. After the memorial service, the burial will take place at New Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, 10150 Horton Hwy, in Greeneville. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
