Dr. Lloyd M. Callahan, Professor Emeritus, The University of Tennessee, died on February 13, 2019. Born in Hobart, Oklahoma in 1934 to Sadie and Clyde Callahan, he served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War, from July 1952 – 1955. He earned a BS Degree and an MS Degree from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He was a recipient of the National Science Award. Lloyd joined the faculty of The University of Tennessee on July 1, 1984, advancing through the ranks to Full Professor in the Departments of Agronomy and Plant Sciences, retiring June 30, 2000 as a Professor Emeritus. He directed a very successful research program for the university.
Lloyd accepted Christ on February 18, 1989 and belonged to Temple Baptist Church in Kingsport. He was also a Gideon. While in Knoxville, he belonged to Temple Baptist Church in Powell and went on six foreign mission trips.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Sadie and Clyde Callahan; son, Robert Callahan; daughter, Rebecca Hiller; and two brothers, Pat and Bill Callahan.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Fisher Callahan; two sons, Wayne Callahan and Kevin Callahan; brother, Charles Callahan, Oklahoma; sister, Carol Girgis, New Jersey; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Scott Poe and Sarah Witt and husband Tim; and stepson, David Poe and wife Debbie. Lloyd also had a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 12-2:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Dr. Scott Young officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
