Lyle Richardson Smith, M.D. 1923 - 2011
Dr. Lyle Richardson Smith of Kingsport, TN passed away early Saturday morning, September 3, 2011 at his home.
Dr. Smith wished to be remembered for his service to the people of this area. He delivered approximately 3, 000 babies in his practice. The practice of medicine was a joy to Dr. Smith and he was known for his laughter and good nature.
Born on February 7, 1923, in Pleasant Hill, TN, Dr. Smith served in World War II, 306th Bomb Group H, 8th Air Force in England. He flew 31 missions including the First Daylight Bombing of Berlin and the invasion of Europe on D-Day. He was decorated with a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters.
Following the war, he returned to Beloit College to finish his Bachelor's Degree. He taught at Cumberland County High School prior to attending Cornell University Medical College in New York City. He completed his internship and residency at Philadelphia General Hospital in internal medicine prior to coming to Kingsport to set up his medical practice in 1953.
Dr. Smith was a 50 plus years 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was raised to the 3rd degree in 1945.
Dr. Smith was a Charter Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. He was president of the staff at Holston Valley Medical Center in 1965 and served on the executive committee for 21 years.
He held a degree in Theology from the University of the South Sewanee. He was a lector for 40 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
After his retirement, Dr. Smith enjoyed teaching English Medieval History for many years at East Tennessee State University at the Kingsport Allandale Center for Continuing Education.
Dr. Smith was predeceased by his first wife, Peggy Ann, the mother of his children and a son, Kimball Richardson Smith; his parents, Albert Horn Smith and Carolyn Stevens Richardson Smith; brother, Robert Kimball Smith and an infant brother.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Yankee Smith; daughter Carolyn Stevens Richardson Smith Puckett and her husband Lawrence W. Puckett; son, Lyle Huntington Richardson Smith and his wife, Jeanne Chambers Smith; four grandchildren, Anna Gabriella Richardson Smith, Matthew Lyle Huntington Puckett, Catherine Elizabeth Richardson Smith; Lyle Huntington Richardson Smith II; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, TN.
Inurnment services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with The Rev. C. Edward Osborne, PhD officiating.
Pallbearers will be Wade Yankee, Gary Yankee, Lynn West, and the Monday Lunch Group of Retired Doctors RODEO.
