Dr. Monte W. Phillips, age 76, of Kingsport, TN, died on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, with his wife and son by his side. He was born on January 26, 1936, in Chattanooga, TN. In 1960, Dr. Phillips graduated from The University of Tennessee Memphis College of Medicine and Surgery. He completed his residency in General Surgery at The University of Alabama- Birmingham and was drafted to serve as a physician in Vietnam. He returned to The University of Alabama- Birmingham and trained under world-renowned surgeon Dr. John W. Kirklin in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Phillips moved to Kingsport, TN, in 1971 and practiced for more than 20 years before retiring to spend time between Kingsport, his farm in Hot Springs, VA, and on the water in St. George Island, FL. He enjoyed fishing, boating, spending time with his family and dogs Abigail, Emmie Lou, Katie, rescue greyhound Alice, Lily and the most recent rescue addition Minnie Rock.
Dr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents Augusta "Tot" Hortense and William Oscar Phillips, as well as his brother, Dr. Charles Michael Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene Phillips of Kingsport, TN; son and daughter-in-law Oscar and Melissa Phillips of Greensboro, NC; daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Christian Trendel of Charlottesville, VA; son Karl Phillips of Honolulu, HI; son John Phillips of Kingsport, TN; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Judy Fleenor of Huntington Beach, CA; grandsons Oscar, Carson and Samuel Phillips, Spencer Fleenor, Ryker Trendel, niece Sheldon Barr of Richmond, VA; and great-niece Haley Maguire.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 10, 2012, from 1-3pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport, TN. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3pm with Dr. Rick Light officiating.
