Dr. Newton H. Shearer Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Wednesday, May 4th at Baysmont/Asbury Place of Kingsport. Born 1920 in Lynchburg, Virginia, Dr. Shearer grew up in a loving home enjoying sports and excelling academically.
Dr. Shearer completed his PH D. in chemistry at the University of Virginia in 1946 and went to work for the Tennessee Eastman Company. For 40 years Dr. Shearer worked on many projects earning over 50 patents and was an integral part of the research team that discovered the Eastman 910 Permabond adhesive commonly known as Super Glue or Krazy Glue. As part of his distinguished career, Dr. Shearer was appointed to conduct research in Rochester, New York and Zurich, Switzerland.
Retirement didn't slow Dr. Shearer down. He obtained an affiliate broker's real estate license and also enjoyed two of his greatest passions, golf and tennis. In 1992 Dr. Shearer was asked to take the lead in establishing an institute for continued learning for people 50 and over. The Kingsport Institute for Continued Learning had their first semester in 1993. He was instrumental in the founding of the Columbarium at First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Dr. Shearer was pre-deceased by his parents, Newton H. Shearer Sr. and Vera Louise Layne Shearer, and his baby brother, Charles Arthur. His beautiful bride, Betty Lou Johnson Shearer passed away in 2011.
Surviving family includes his daughter, Layne Shearer Willen of Kingsport; his son, Newton "Trey" Shearer III of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Gene W. Lady III and wife, Kellie Weston-Lady, Dylan H. Jantz, Michelle Shearer-Matthews and husband, Devin, Newton H. "Chipp" Shearer IV, David Matthew Shearer and John-Luke Shearer; step-great-grandchildren, Kyla and Eli; and special family friend, Bronson Willen.
Dr. Shearer's memorial service will be held on Monday, May 9, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Green and Rev. Jack P. Weikel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A private inurnment will be conducted at the First Broad Street United Methodist Church Columbarium.

Dr. Shearer's family has the deepest heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of Asbury Place of Kingsport as well as Lisa Trent Perry for the care and companionship of both Newt and Betty Lou.
