Dr. Robert C. Harrington, Jr., died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Rome, GA, and resided in Kingsport since 1948.
He obtained his doctorate at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1948 after having served four years in the U.S. Navy at various stations including duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant. While in the Navy, he designed a gunnery mechanical system that trained sailors operating anti-aircraft guns how to shoot down enemy aircraft.
During his career at Eastman Chemical and Eastman Kodak as a chemical scientist, Robert was awarded many patents, both mechanical and chemical, and authored numerous papers that were published in nationally circulated trade periodicals and encyclopedias. He was also noted for his metal sculptures which he enjoyed making after retiring. One of his sculptures is a cross and candlesticks located in the First Broad Street Methodist Church chapel in the Shepherd Center in Kingsport. His hobbies and skills covered many different topics. He was known for a strong whit and in his later years, he designed many different toys that children in the neighborhood enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura, and son Robert C. Harrington III.
Robert's wishes were to be cremated.
