Dr. Malcolm Emory Rogers, of Kingsport, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center, ending a long life dedicated to the service of others and quiet kindness to all. Dr. Rogers was born in Gilbertown, Choctaw County, Alabama, on July 3, 1923, the second of eight children born to Samuel Earl Rogers and Verna McRae Rogers. He graduated from Southern Junior College in Chattanooga and Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, Michigan before receiving a Medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis in 1948. While working and living in Jefferson City, Tennessee with his first medical practice, he met and courted Carson Newman College coed, Doris Evelyn Abernathy; they were married in 1952.
In addition to surgical residencies in Nashville and Milwaukee, Dr. Rogers served as a ship-board Naval medical officer during the Korean conflict. The young Rogers family also lived in Norfolk, Virginia and Norman, Oklahoma while Dr. Rogers continued his career in the Navy. In 1956 Dr. Rogers and family moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina where he accepted a position with the Veteran's Administration. He was admitted as a fellow in the American College of Surgeons in 1959.
In 1960, Dr. and Mrs. Rogers researched and selected Kingsport as the ideal location to raise their growing and active family and to start a private practice in General Surgery. Until his retirement in 1990, Dr. Rogers touched the lives of many people during his long and productive career.
The Rogers joined First Broad Street United Methodist Church in 1961, where they remain members. Outside his love of Medicine, Dr. Rogers enjoyed working on his farm near Clinchport, Virginia and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Evelyn, and four sons and their families; Malcolm Rogers of Knoxville, Tom Rogers and wife, Jenny, Bill Rogers and wife, Allyson, and Bob Rogers and wife, Lisa, all of Kingsport.
