Dr. Thomas H. Wicker

Dr. Thomas H. Wicker, Jr. 92 years old and resident of Baysmont/Asbury Place in Kingsport, passed away on May 1 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Gainesville, Florida on November 19, 1923, Dr. Wicker grew up in several locations in Florida and attended the University of Florida.

Upon completion of his bachelor's degree in chemistry, Dr. Wicker served in the U.S. Army for 2 years in the Pacific theater in the Philippines and in the occupation of Japan. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to the University of Florida and received his PhD in 1951. His career was spent as a research chemist for 35 years at Tennessee Eastman Company. During his research career at Eastman, he received several individual patents as well as being part of the team that discovered Eastman 910 adhesive (super glue). Upon his retirement, he enjoyed wood-working, gardening, traveling, and serving as a deacon at First Baptist Church.

Dr. Wicker was pre-deceased by his parents: Thomas and Margaret Wicker, and brothers Hugh and Earl Wicker.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Barker Wicker, sons Robert Wicker (Beth Wilkening) of Atlanta, GA, Bruce Wicker (Su Clausen) of Blacksburg, VA and Dr. Joe Wicker (Debbie) of Pinehurst, NC and grand-son Andrew Wicker of Atlanta, Ga. Other survivors include step-sons Jim Barker (Marcia) of Clemson, SC and their children Jacob (Rita) and Britt, Andy Barker (Carol) of Elm City, NC and his children Matt, Joshua, and Hannah and Joe Barker (Sandy) of Kingsport, TN and their children Logan Barker and Jody (Josh) Cowart. Dr. Wicker enjoyed his four great-grandchildren as well: Lennox, Madeline, Eliza and James.

Dr. Wicker's funeral will be held on Wednesday in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:30 before the funeral. Interment will immediately follow the funeral at East Lawn Memorial Park.
