Edgar Worth Ellington, Jr., 91, of Kingsport, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 16, 2012 after a long and fulfilling life. He grew up in Pittsboro, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
During WW II, he served with the 5th U.S. Army in North Africa and Italian campaigns, including the Salerno Invasion and Anzio Beachhead and received the Purple Heart.
After the war, he came to Kingsport, where he worked for Tennessee Eastman Company. He retired as Manager of the Payroll Department in 1985.
Mr. Ellington was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and a founding member of Greer Memorial Sunday School Class. For many years he served as the Church Sunday School Treasurer and as usher for the morning worship service.
As a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Cosmopolitan Kingsport, he was twice named Kiwanian of the Year. Mr. Ellington was a dedicated member of the American Legion, Post 3 for more than 60 years. He also served as an American Red Cross Volunteer at Indian Path Hospital.
Mr. Ellington enjoyed photography, traveling, golf and Tar-Heel basketball.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ethel Wright Ellington and Edgar W. Ellington, Sr., of Charleston, SC, and his brothers, Wright Ellington of Titusville, FL, William C. Ellington of Charleston, SC, and James R. Ellington of Vacaville, CA.
He leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Jean Hall Ellington, his daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Dan Duncan of Memphis, and Jane and Dan Dove of Bristol, his sister, Mary E. Tatum of Winston-Salem, NC and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of First Broad Street United Methodist Church at 2:00 on Sunday, February 26, 2012 with Rev. Jack P. Weikel and Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception at the Church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1346, Kingsport, TN 37662.
