Edith Inez Nelms

Edith Inez Nelms, 89, of Owensboro, KY, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at her home, in the care of her family.

Born in the community of Glamorgan in Wise County, VA, she was a daughter of the late Ezra Osborne and Atlas Greer Osborne and spent her childhood in Norton, VA. At the age of 19 she moved with her family to Kingsport, TN, where she made her home until coming to Owensboro in 2002 to be near her daughter, Dianne Christman.

Mrs. Nelms graduated from East Tennessee State University as a nurse, a career she faithfully carried out at the former Holston Valley Community Hospital. Mrs. Nelms spent most of her life serving God, family, church and others.

In Kingsport, she was committed to teaching and serving children and was very active with child evangelism. She was active in community activities, particularly with education, parent-teacher organizations and the interests of her children.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Nelms, in 1998; her daughter, Brenda Nelms, in 1972; her brothers, Glenn Osborne and Monroe Osborne; and her sister, Mary Hickman.

Mrs. Nelms was the loving mother of Dianne Nelms Christman and her husband Ted; the caring grandmother of Rebekah Christman Kline and her husband, Justin, and Jonathan Christman and his wife, Tina; and the devoted great-grandmother of Eliza Kline and Jersie Kline, all of whom live in Owensboro; the sister of Wilburn Osborne of Kingsport; and the aunt of several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mrs. Nelms will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Baptist Church in Owensboro.

Friends in Kingsport may visit with the family at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport, after 9 a.m. Tuesday, where a service will be held at 10 a.m. Private interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Kingsport.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Multipurpose Educational Facility Building Fund, the Urban Ministry Fund or the East Indian Ministry Fund, all programs of Heritage Baptist Church.
