Edith Long Vance, Kingsport, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. She was born in New Market, TN on August 15, 1928 to the late Robert Earl and Edith Elmore Long and grew up in Kingsport. Edith was a 1946 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended Maryville College. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Bennett Edwards Insurance Agents, Moore and Walker Insurance and later, for Sears. Edith had volunteered at the Holston Valley Hospital Auxillary and the Colonial Heights Library.
She was a member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church where she sang in the chancel choir and helped start the handbell choir. Edith was also a member of Presbyterian
Women and helped start the pre-school program at the church. She was a member of the Pandora dance club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edith Elmore Long and Robert Earl Long; sister, Ruth E. Long; and brothers, Bob Long and wife, Eleanor, and Kenneth Long and wife, Mary Lee.
Edith is survived by her husband of 57 years, Claude S. Vance, Jr. of Kingsport; daughters, Linda V. Streeter and husband, Jim of Woodstock, GA, and Sandra K. Vance of Johnson City; grandson, Mark Streeter of Powder Springs, GA; brother, Bill Long and wife, Rita of Chillicothe, OH; nieces, Susan Weems and husband, Walter, Sherry Abeson and husband, Tony, Ruth Joy and husband, Jim, Katherine Stewart-Hoffman and husband, Chris, and Anna Long; nephews, George Long and wife, Beverly, Dwight Long and Allen Long; sisters-in-law, Lucretia (Creta) V. Gilmer of Bristol, VA, and Mildred Vance Secular and husband, Sidney of Silver Springs, MD; three grand-nieces; two grand-nephews; and special friends, Bill and Norma Beazell and Howard and Martha Cooper.
A committal service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church Columbarium with Pastor Tom Phillips officiating.
