Edna Burleson Toncray, 102, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2009, after a brief illness at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. She was born in Bakersville, NC on March 4th, 1907 to the late Senia and Stokes Burleson.
Her loving and gracious manner has always been an inspiration to her family and friends. Everyone that has known her became a much better person. Her joy of life has been expressed in her creative abilities and talents of sewing, knitting, gardening, and rug hooking. Edna was actively involved in the American Red Cross after WWII; she was a model for J. Fred Johnson Department store; held various offices in PTA's, anda"until recentlya"she was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and its Women's Guild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Toncray, Jr.; her siblings, Rose Longbrake, Thelma Bryant, Holbert Burleson, Jim Burleson, Ruby Taylor, and Robert Burleson; and her niece, Betty Simpson.
She is survived by a son, George W. Toncray III and his wife Louisa of Kingsport; a daughter, Rachel Toncray Tiller and her husband Jim of Hilton Head Island, SC; grandchildren, Michelle Greg Morie of Sanford, NC; Renee Toncray of Morganton, NC, Jason Tiller, of Maui, HI; Joshua Melissa Tiller of Bluffton, SC; and Christy Ben Stipes of Strawberry Plains, TN; two step-grandchildren, Allison Minter and Deborah Hamblin; and her great-grandchildren, Haley and Phillip Morie and Sarah Elizabeth Tillera"all of whom adored their Great Edna. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Clara Jane Longbrake, Nancy Crowder, Russell Bryant, and J.W. Burleson.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Edward J. Mills, III, officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.
