Eleanor Hobbs Cox, 72, died Sunday evening, January 1, 2012, at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lyle D. Hobbs. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Charles E. Cox, her mother, Ethel Galloway Hobbs, both of Kingsport; three children and four grandchildren including son and daughter-in-law Charles Ernie and Leanne Cox of Kingsport, daughters and sons-in-law, Christine Cox and Michael Larson of Durham, NC, and Susan and Jeffrey Small of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Lily Rains of Durham, NC; Caroline, Terry and Thomas Johnson of Augusta, GA; and her sister and brother in law, Jean and Glen Light of St. Louis, MO; a large extended family and many dear friends.
Eleanor was born in 1939 in Kingsport and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1957, and Virginia Intermont College in 1959. Eleanor joined the First Methodist Church in her teens and remained a faithful member the rest of her life. She belonged to the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class, the Women's Circle and served on the Altar Guild. She was active in several organizations in the community including the Long Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kingsport Book Club, Questers, the Junior League, Friends of Allandale and the Garden Guild of Ridgefields.
Eleanor loved sports, playing tennis and golf and watching basketball and football. She enjoyed travel and with her husband Charles, visited most of the states and made several trips to Europe, including England and Scandinavian countries. She was an avid gardener throughout her life along with many other interests and talents.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Weikel and Rev. Will Lauderback officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
