Elizabeth Ann Collett Hay, 84, Kingsport, died at 10:30 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Asbury Place at Baysmont. Born in Thomasville, NC, she was a graduate of the Woman's College of North Carolina UNC Greensboro. She completed her Master's degree at UNC Chapel Hill.
Elizabeth Ann was dedicated to education and service, and through her professional and volunteer efforts she enriched many lives. Her teaching career extended for more than 30 years at Converse, Salem, and King Colleges.
While at King College she began leading students on service learning trips to Haiti and Georgia. These experiences inspired her to a lifelong relationship with Habitat for Humanity. She was instrumental in the founding of Holston Habitat for Humanity in 1985, and was active in Habitat's work for more than a quarter century.
She served on various committees in Kingsport, working with the Netherland Inn Association and Kingsport Tomorrow, as well as serving on the Board of Koinonia Partners in Americus, GA for a number of years. Elizabeth Ann served as an Elder and was active in Women of the Church at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. She also served as Moderator of Holston Presbytery.
Elizabeth Ann was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Hay, Jr.; parents, Jerome and Fleta Collett; and brothers, Ralph and Harrell Collett.
She is survived by her sons, John R. Hay, III of Kingsport, Jerome Hay and wife, Judy Beck of Asheville, NC, and William Hay and wife, Claudia of Germany; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Duncan, Manon and Megan Hay; and brother, John Collett of Thomasville, NC.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday February 24, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, Kingsport, with Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle and The Rev. Sharon Amstutz officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
Graveside services will be Wednesday Feb. 27, 2013 at noon in Holly Hill Memorial Park in Thomasville, NC, with Rev. Peggy Finch officiating.
