Elmer Dwight "Hoppie" Carter, 77, passed away at noon on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Indian Path Medical Center following an extended illness. Elmer was born in Scott County, VA and lived in Kingsport since early childhood. He was a graduate of Sullivan High School, class of '57. Elmer was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He was an iron worker having worked for various construction companies. Hoppie loved to bass fish and was a member of the Kingsport Bass Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Frazier Carter; stepson, Terry Hopkins; parents, James Clyde Carter and Evelyn Bowen Carter; and brother, James Kennie Carter.
Hoppie is survived by sister-in-law, Phyllis Carter of Kingsport; nephew, Jim and Glenda Carter of Kingsport; niece, Ava Carter of Kingsport; special cousins, Sheila Jennings of Johnson City and Virginia Carter of Kingsport; step-granddaughter, Beth Hopkins Littrell of Kingsport; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Hannah, Emily and Gracie; brother-in-law, Leonard and Sandra Frazier of Kingsport; aunt, Ruth Clawson of Kingsport; and his special caregivers, Aleish and Shamrock.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-2:00 pm at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Marvin Egan and Rev. Billy Frazier officiating.
The graveside service will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jim Carter, Dean Carter, Paul Carter, Dale Carter, Robby Hunt, Nathan Hunt, Joel Jennings and Mike Manis.
