Emory Lee "Twig" Flanagan, 86, of Kingsport, died while surrounded by his family at 11:04 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2009 at the home of his daughter, Linda H. Skeen of Nickelsville, VA.
Emory had lived in Church Hill and Kingsport all of his life. He served in the U. S. Navy on Bashaw Sub 241 as a machinist mate in the South Pacific during World War II. He was employed with Tennessee Eastman for 43 years retiring as a Supervisor November 1, 1983. Emory was an avid sports fan, enjoyed traveling, and was a good gardener.
He was a charter member of Homeland Baptist Church where he served as an usher and member of the Board of Trustees.
Emory was preceded in death by his father and mother, Roy Flanagan and Cornelia Sams Flanagan; sister, Carrie Guinn and Lydia Blizzard; and brothers, Woodrow, Wilson, Ikey, and Maxwell Flanagan.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Virginia Hudson Flanagan; two daughters, Linda H. Skeen, Nickelsville and Donna Almany and husband Philip, Kingsport; four sons, Gerald Flanagan and wife Judy of Kingsport, Roger Flanagan and wife Michelle of Jonesborough, Kenneth Flanagan and wife Rene of Kingsport, and Anthony Flanagan and wife Mary of Kingsport; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Shipstone, Dr. Dena Smith, the staff of W-3 Oncology, and Wellmont Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday February 2 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will follow at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor J. W. Depew officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday February 3 at East Lawn Memorial Park. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Emory's church family will be honorary pallbearers.
