Emory J. Fugate, 81, died Friday morning, April 9, 2010, at his home.
Emory was born in Scott County, VA and graduated from Shoemaker High School in 1946. After completion of a business course at Whitney School of Business in 1947, he managed and operated the Scott County Theatre in Gate City until November 1950 when he entered the Army. After serving two years in the Army, eighteen months as a military policeman in Korea, he was honorably discharged and entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He graduated in June, 1956 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. On June 18, 1956 he joined Kingsport Power Company as an Electrical Engineer and was later named as an Engineering Supervisor until his retirement in 1988.
Emory was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church and was a commissioner for Boy Scout Troop #89.
His parents, Howard Oakley Fugate and Nell Mae Lawson Fugate preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Audrae Kesterson Fugate, Kingsport; sons, David Alan Fugate and wife, Crystal of Fredericksburg, VA and Michael Howard Fugate and wife, Danielle of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter, Susan Denise Ueffing and husband, Joost of Ottawa, Canada; grandchildren, Wesley Thomas Storke, Ashby King Storke, Oakley Calvin Fugate, Ambra Noelle and Austin Michael Fugate; sister, Sue F. Dixon, Winchester, VA; sister-in-law, Louise Powers, Charleston, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Services will follow at 8 p.m. with Pastor Randy Lantz officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Park with military rites by the American Legion Posts #3/265. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home to go in procession.
The family extends special gratitude to the entire staff of Amedisys Hospice and to a special niece, Diane Hagey.
