Ernest Wayne Pickens, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 5, 2009.
Wayne was a member of Fall Branch United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 30 years, and as a lay leader. He was a charter member of the Fall Branch Ruritan Club, serving as president and long-time treasurer. Wayne served in the Army National Guard for 10 years, and worked as a barber for 42 years in Sullivan Gardens. Wayne was well-loved and will be much missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lofa Washington Pickens; mother, Annie Ruth Grimsley; and brother, Carl Pickens.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jackie Pickens, of Fall Branch; daughter, DeDe Pickens Souza; son-in-law, Dr. Joseph Souza; granddaughter, Millie Rose Souza, all of Asheville, NC; sister, Janice Cox, of Fall Branch; nephew, Allen Henry, of Hampton; and niece, Julie Pickens Whitaker, of Kingsport.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Friday, October 9th at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Fall Branch.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 10th at 11 a.m. at Fall Branch United Methodist Church, with Rev. Barry Lane and Rev. John Bardsley officiating. Graveside services will follow immediately at the church cemetery.
