Eugene R. Shelton

Eugene R. Shelton, 87, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Scott County, VA, he had resided in Kingsport since 1941. Gene served in the U. S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the Third Army under General George S. Patton. His division was the spearhead division of the Third Army in the liberation of some of the German concentration camps. Gene worked at Tennessee Eastman Company/Kodak from 1941 to 1982 as a lab technician. He was also owner of the Peggy Ann Restaurant for a brief period.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Strong Shelton; son, Randy Shelton; parents, Claude C. and Rosa Davidson Shelton; sisters, Lectie Purdy and Ida Cregger; and brothers, Clyde C. Shelton and Claude M. Shelton.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Sherry Jeffers and husband Steve of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Candace Moody and husband Matt and Cameron Jeffers; one great-grandson, Caden Moody; daughter-in-law, Kathy Fisher of Indianapolis, IN; sister, Virginia Bennett and husband A.T. of Nashville; brother, James N. Shelton and wife Jacquline of Pennington Gap, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Posts #3/265.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cameron Jeffers, Matt Moody, Dustin Jeffers, Cody Jeffers, Caleb Jeffers, Cole Jeffers, and Andy Hoskins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
