Evelyn Knapp, 82, of Kingsport, TN, went to be with her beloved Lord and Savior on Friday, July 27 after a long illness. She and her husband, Douglas Knapp were Southern Baptist missionaries in Tanzania for twenty-seven years. Mrs. Knapp raised four children who today are active Christians. She started a youth work in Tanzania which touched thousands of young lives. Many of today's Tanzanian pastors were called into the ministry under her leadership. There are believers all over Tanzania who are mourning as word spreads of her passing.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 64 years, Douglas Knapp of Kingsport, and four children: Mrs. Suzanne Groce of Louisville, KY, a nurse practitioner who worked in Ethiopia until her recent retirement; Mr. Walter Knapp, a concert pianist and published church musician in Birmingham, AL; Dr. Richard Knapp, a pathologist, author and pastor in Seale, AL; and Dr. Edson Knapp, a radiologist and author who sponsors an orphanage in Tanzania. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, many of whom have a zeal for Christian ministry and missions, and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 4th from 9-10:00 am at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 am with Pastor Allen Jessee officiating. Pastor Jessee accompanied her on her last trip to Tanzania.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
