"... I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith... "
II Timothy 4:7
Evelyn Light Wilkerson, 68, of the Sullivan Gardens Community, departed this life to go on her heavenly journey on Sunday July 12, 2009.
She was born in the Beech Creek Community and grew up in Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. She lived in the Lone Star community for over 50 years and enjoyed camping, gardening, yard sales, reading, bowling, a good joke and playing cards with her friends; but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She was a wonderful, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. She always brought out the best in everyone, even during the most difficult days of her illness; she always had a smile on her face, a compliment to give, and never complained. She will live in our hearts forever and will always be a hero to those who knew her.
After her courageous battle with cancer, she was greeted in heaven by her late husband, Marvin "Rooster" Wilkerson; parents, Glen and Shular Light; sister, Joann Steadman; brother, Donnie Light; and best friend, Essie Langrel.
She leaves behind her daughter, Judy Carter and husband Steve, Crofton MD; son, Randy Wilkerson and wife Nicole, Fall Branch; 2 granddaughters, April Carter Baines, Candice Carter Weihert and husband Daniel; 5 great-grandchildren, Christopher Carter, Nicholas Carter, Jacob Baines, Daysie Weihert, Bella Weihert; two sisters, Novell Wright, Kingsport, Marie Bolton and husband Kermit, Mount Carmel; one brother, Delmas Light, Dryden, Va; special niece, Cindy Fields, Fall Branch; several nieces, nephews, and special friends - Pat Friday, Mark and Lisa Fields, Jim Langrel, Phil Gaddis, and Bobby Shelton.
The family will receive friends from 12:00noon to 1:00pm Wednesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00pm in the funeral home chapel with Joe Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Chris Carter, Nick Carter, Cody Richardson, Daniel Weihert, Phil Gaddis, Mark Fields, Ricky Light and Mark Falin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, Tn, 37601; or to the Humane Society of Greater Kingsport, 2141 Idle Hour Road, Kingsport, Tn, 37660.
The family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice, especially Sandra, Linda, and Christy for their wonderful and loving care.
