Farris Jackson, 84, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Farris was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Washington & Lee University, and also served in the US Navy. Farris then joined Sears Roebuck, coming to Kingsport in 1969 as manager of the Sears store in Greenacres. He became a co-owner of Lyle Construction Co. of Kingsport, then spent 25 years as a commercial realtor with Blue Ridge properties of Kingsport. Farris was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He served in various capacities with the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, including president, Director of 3 years of Air Shows, Grand Marshall Santa Parade, and Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Membership in 1999. He was a member of the Rotary Club, and active with Junior Achievement, serving as president and president of Board of Trustees. Farris then served on the Steering Committee of the JA Hall of Fame from its start in 1993 until 2001. He was chairman of Clean Kingsport in 1993. Farris served on the National Ski Patrol for a total of 25 years in multiple capacities from patroller in 1972, to Southeastern Division Director from 1985-1989. He served on the Airport Commission from 1978 to 2006 and Chairman from 1998-2001. Farris was a director of Kingsport 911 from 1994-2006, and director of Kingsport YMCA from 1996-2006. He was a member of the Kingsport Board of Realtors, a commercial broker, and served in various positions both in the city and the region.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah Elizabeth Farris Jackson and Thomas Francis Jackson, Jr.
Farris is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan Satterfield Jackson; son, Farris Jackson, Jr. and wife Nancy, of St. Louis, MO; daughter, Elizabeth Hullander and husband Bucky of Knoxville, TN; son, Rick Jackson of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Chris Jackson, Carolyn Jackson, Patricia Jackson, Andrew Jackson, Brett Hullander and wife Brittany, Jackson Hullander, Witt Hullander, Brady Jackson, and Blake Jackson; siblings, Rosie Wilkerson and husband Joe, Kathy Hesson and husband Bucky, and Stuart Spicer and wife Pauline; and special thanks to caregiver, Kathy Williams.
The memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle and The Rev. Sharon Amstutz officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
