Flora Elizabeth Heins Pond, 98, passed away on January 6, 2013. She was born on July 28, 1914, to Conrad P. and Jessie R. Heins of Arlington, VA. Flora was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School, Arlington, VA, Class of 1932, and of Harrisonburg State Teachers College now James Madison University where she was elected President of the Senior Class of 1936. She subsequently taught junior high school in the Arlington County School System. She married the late Morris F. Pond of Trenton, MO, on November 30, 1941.
Flora lived most of her life in Arlington and Fairfax Counties, VA. The Methodist Church played a large role in her long life, first at Arlington Methodist, then at Wesley Methodist in Vienna, VA, and finally, at First Broad Street United Methodist in Kingsport. Her hobbies included flower gardening, flower arranging and playing bridge. She moved to Baysmont at Asbury Place in Kingsport, TN in 1989 to be near her late son, Dr. David M. Pond, and his family. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, the Rev. Conrad Heins and Rev. Paul Heins.
Flora is survived by her son, Dr. Stephen F. Pond, and wife, Johanna, of Williamsburg, VA; daughter-in-law, Susan M. Pond, of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Heather James Brey, of St. George, UT, Dr. Alycen Stephen Nigro, of Acton, MA, Benjamin Beth Pond, of Toledo, OH, Anne Linton Ryan Hendrickson, Esq. of Overland Park, KS, Jonathan M. Pond, of Rochester, NY, and Dr. David Dr. Brooks Pond, of Kingsport, TN; eight great-grandchildren, Michael and Camrie Brey, Samuel and Catelyn Nigro, Addien Pond, Daniel and Nicholas Pond and Haskell Hendrickson.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN.
