Floyd Alan Smith, 95, of Kingsport, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Asbury Place Baysmont.
He was born August 6, 1915 in Burnsville, MS to the late Ira and Blanche Floyd Smith.
Floyd worked a number of jobs after marrying Loyce in 1934. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1944 and served until being discharged in 1946. He later worked in a supervisory job for Kellogg Company in Memphis until he retired.
Floyd and Loyce were active members of Cherry Road Baptist Church in Memphis for 50 years. Most of that time Floyd served as a deacon and was active in the Mission Ministries of the church in helping flood victims and others in need. A favorite activity for Floyd and Loyce was to travel to Ridgecrest with the church senior group each year for the Senior's week there. Floyd was also a faithful member of the church choir for all those years.
The two and one-half years he spent at Baysmont were made special by the good friends he had there, as well as the capable and loving staff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Loyce Marlar Smith; and two sisters, Mozelle Smith Nash and Shirley Counce Barnes.
Floyd is survived by his son, Douglas Smith and wife Rosalie of Kingsport, TN; two daughters, Kay Smith Earhart and husband John of Orange Park, FL and Martha Smith Grissom Johnson and husband Bill of Raleigh, NC; four grandsons, Dr. John Alan Smith and wife Wendy of Kingsport, TN, Ryan Grissom of Los Angeles, CA, Nathan Johnson of Orlando, FL, Neal Johnson and wife Stephanie of Murfreesboro, TN; three granddaughters, Whitney Earhart of Nashville, TN, Amelia Earhart Daniel and husband Michael of British Virgin Islands, Rachel Grissom of Los Angeles, CA; two great-granddaughters, Emily Bethany Smith and Rachel Rea Smith of Kingsport; one great-grandson, Zachary Johnson of Murfreesboro, TN; one brother, Elmer Ray Counce of Burnsville, Mississippi; special grandniece, Laura Susan Turner and husband Jim of Knoxville, TN; and special close friends, Ralph, Lucy, and Gene of Asbury Place Baysmont as well as many other friends and staff there.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m., Thursday, July 21, at First Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.
