Floyd “Sam” Thompson, 86, Kingsport, TN, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Kingsport TN and lived in the Vermont Community his entire life. Sam graduated from Lynn View High School in 1950. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and a member of Vermont United Methodist Church. He worked for Mason Dixon for 24 years. Sam was an active member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688. He was a 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason, Jericho Shrine Temple Marching Patrol and Royal Order Jesters, Kingsport Moose Lodge #972, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4933, American Legion Post 3/265 and Fraternal Order Eagles #3141. He made over 150 trips transporting children and families to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Sam was a gentle soul and a loving brother, uncle, and faithful friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Howard and Laura Jane (Litton) Thompson; wife, Shirley Thompson; brothers, Donald Thompson and Wayne Thompson; sister, Katherine Price; and nephew, Jon Thompson.
Sam is survived by his loving companion of many years, Billie J. Castle; brother, Lowell Thompson (Nancy); sisters, Charlene Clark, and Janice Barrett (Bud); nieces, Laura Smith, Libby Korpal and Joy Price; nephews, Allen Thompson, David Thompson, Donald Thompson, Steve Thompson, Bryan Clark, Tony Barrett and Chad Thompson; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and lifelong friend, Charles “Slick” Stuffle.
The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 pm on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. A masonic funeral service will follow with the Masonic Rites performed by Masonic Lodge #688 and with Pastor Jeremy McMillan officiating.
The graveside service will be held on Monday at 3:00 pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Military Rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
Pallbearers will be Richard Keesling, Richard Hammond, Ralph Wright, Kenneth Cox and Sam’s nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Jericho Marching Patrol.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
