Forrest Franklin Schrum, Jr., died Tuesday evening at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport following a lengthy illness.
Frank was born on Nov. 9, 1931, in Newton, NC, the son of the late Forrest F. and Bess Lore Schrum.
He was a graduate of Newton-Conover High School and received a Bachelor?s and a Master?s degree in Textile Chemistry at North Carolina State University. He also served 2 years in the U.S. Army. Frank enjoyed a 33-year career with Eastman Chemical Co., retiring in June, 1991.
His community involvement included volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and the Kingsport Symphony Board. He was a long-time member of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder and Deacon.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and an infant sister, Bess L. Schrum.
Frank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betsy Wells Schrum of Kingsport; his son, Dr. Forrest Schrum and wife, Beverly, of Rome, Ga.; and his daughter, Susan S. Fowler and husband, Paul, of Cary, N.C. He is survived by five grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew Fowler and Caroline, Franklin and Coulter Schrum. Also surviving are his brother, Ed Schrum and wife, Edith; his sister, Dorothy S. Hammond, all of Newton, N.C.; and several nieces and a nephew.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with memorial services following at Waverly Road Presbyterian at 11 a.m. Rev. Daniel S. Clark will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
