Frances Jane Mooney

Frances Jane Mooney, 84, of Kingsport, died on Wednesday, February 27th at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. She was a graduate of Sullivan High School and received a B.S. Degree in Music from East Tennessee State University.

She was a teacher in the Sullivan County School system for 6 years, having taught at Long Island Elementary School, then at Lynn Garden Elementary School as a music teacher, at which point she returned to Long Island as a music teacher. Frances taught private piano lessons for several years.

In 1954 she became a stenographer at the FBI Field Office in Knoxville, then in 1955 she began six years as secretary to the Vice President and General Manager of the Kingsport Times-News, first with Ben Haden now a nationally known pastor and television speaker and then with his successor, Ralph Disler. Following the sale of the newspaper, she became secretary to the Vice President of Finance, American Saint Gobain Corporation, successor to Blue Ridge Glass Company. Mr. Frank M. Herman was serving in that capacity at that time. In 1964 she became secretary to William T. Gamble, Attorney-at-law, and served 25 years in that capacity. Frances became a Certified Professional Secretary CPS in 1968 and served in various offices in the National Secretaries Association now the International Association of Administrative Professionals, and the Kingsport Legal Secretaries Association. She was named Secretary of the Year in 1971.

During high school and college, she served as a pianist and organist at various churches in Kingsport, including Long Island Baptist, Lynn Garden Baptist Church and Mafair United Methodist Church. On January 1, 1970 she began service as organist at Calvary Baptist Church and served in that capacity since that date. She also served as Clerk of the Calvary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Franklin Mooney June 3, 1962 and Mildred Grace Kite Mooney December 13, 1999; paternal grandparents, Albert Mooney and Nancy Jane Payne Mooney; and maternal grandparents, Samuel Elkanah Kite and Frances Catherine Worsham Kite.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:30-2:30 pm at Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 pm with Pastor Donnie C. Brannen officiating. Music will be provided by Debbie Johnson and Mikel Caywood, with soloist, Ann Gamble.

Burial will follow the funeral service at Highland Cemetery. Deacons will serve as pallbearers.
