Francis D. Haggerty, 82, of Kingsport, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Holston Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Francis was born February 5, 1927 in Southport, Connecticut and with his family, he grew up on an uncle's large plantation on the Mississippi River in Louisiana.
After three years at Western Military Academy and graduation, Francis was drafted into the U. S. Army where he spent seventeen months in a tour of service in Germany. He graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans with a major in history and then worked in oil fields for three years in Louisiana.
In 1959, he married Roma Kathryn Bellamy and moved to Winnetka, IL where he served as an external auditor for the First National Bank of Chicago for thirty years. After retiring in March 1985 he moved to Kingsport, the hometown of his wife.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Bellamy Haggerty in 2000; his parents; brothers, Walter and Lee Haggerty; sister, Mary Haggerty; and niece, Helen Haggerty.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Malcolm Haggerty and wife Jill of Ashland, KY; twin grandsons, Finnian and Patrick Haggerty; brother, Wilburt Haggerty and wife Eileen; and two nephews, Thomas Haggerty and Edward Haggerty.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Dominic Catholic Church. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. Charles Burton officiating.
