Fred Long, 84, of Kingsport, stepped into Eternity Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at Wexford House.
Mr. Long served in the U. S. Navy in World War II on the USS Stafford, a destroyer escort. He was a member of Arcadia Presbyterian Church, PCA. Fred was a charter member of Bloomingdale Ruritan Club, where he was active for many years. He retired from Eastman Kodak in 1986. He was a loving husband, father, Papaw, great-grandfather, and brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy Long, brother Wayland Long, granddaughter, Jessica Woodward, and sister-in-law Reba Long.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lula Long; daughter, Teresa Woodward and husband Hoyt; son Fred Long, Jr., and wife Brenda, all of Kingsport; granddaughter, Brandy Mowdy; grandson, Paul Bo Long; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Etta Haney, Hillsville, OH; three brothers, D. B. Long and wife Faye, James Long and wife Aleta, and Monroe Long, all of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson
Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., with Rev. John Irwin officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park, with military rites provided by the V.F.W. Post 4943. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Kinsler, Ken Strickland, Grady Bell, Charles Newland, Jerry Hash, Johnny Christian, Steve Johnson, and Ralph Campbell.
