Gale Benton, Sr., 65, Rogersville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, September 10, 2015, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Hawkins County, TN, on July 14, 1950, a son of the late Frank and Margaret Benton, he had resided in this area his entire life. He attended Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. Gale retired from A&L Construction in 2007 following 32 years of service.
He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, dad, papaw, brother and friend who loved to spend time with his family, watching football, and working on his farm.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and doctors on the 4th and 5th floors of Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, Gale was preceded in death by his sister, Ora Robinette; great-nephew, Aaron McCracken; niece, Debbie Dykes; and his mother and father-in-law, James and Mable Manis.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy Manis Benton; sons, Gale Benton, Jr., Rogersville, and Robert Curry Benton, Sr., and wife, Michelle, Rogersville; daughters, Shelia Dorton and husband, Bobby, Kingsport, and Tammy Flannagan and boyfriend, Bobby Dorton; fourteen grandchildren, Chelsea, Haleigh, Josh, Jennifer, Wesley, Dustin, Brooke, Curry, Damon, Jessica, Annie, Mason, Logan, Will, Tasha and Brian; four great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Ellie, Courtney and Grayson; brothers, Howard Benton and wife, Joyce, Rogersville, and Charles Benton, Church Hill; sisters, Edna Smith and husband, Carroll, Church Hill, and Charlotte McCracken and husband, Kermit, Church Hill; sisters-in-law, Virginia Herring, Kingsport, Gay Shelton, Kingsport, and Joy Leming, Jonesborough; his very special aunt, Mamie Cooter; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, and at other hours at the residence. The service will follow in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Wyndell Sydebothom officiating, and special music by members of Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church.
The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Zion Cemetery, Baileyton, TN. Those attending services are asked to assemble at the graveside by 10:45 a.m. Monday.
Pallbearers will be Wayne McCracken, Mickey McCracken, Steven Smith, Tony Smith, Tom Shelton, Wesley Williams, John Williams, Casey McCracken, Dustin Benton, Curry Benton, and Logan Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Benton, Bobby (Shelia) Dorton, Tony Roberto, Mitchell Littleton, and Bobby (Tammy) Dorton.
