Gary Alan Gilmore

Gary Alan Gilmore, 77, of Kingsport, went to be with his Lord and savior on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Gary was born on November 26, 1947, in Sullivan County where he would remain a lifelong resident. He graduated from Sullivan High school in 1966 and went on to marry his beloved wife, Diane, on April 29th of 1967. Gary joined the United States Army in January of 1968 as a helicopter mechanic and member of the 1st aviation brigade division; he had a love for Chinook helicopters. He was stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, VA and was deployed to Vietnam in July of 1969 and returned to the states in August of 1970. Gary achieved the rank of specialist 5 and was incredibly proud of his service and dedication to his country. After returning from deployment and upon exiting the military, Gary immediately entered back into the workforce. Over the years he worked for North Electric, Thornton Communications, AFG Glass plant in sales and ultimately retired from BAE. He was a longtime member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, actively attending until his declining health prevented him from doing so. Gary enjoyed several hobbies including building model cars and race cars, reading western and mystery books and watching his UT Vols play.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward F. and Margaret Jones Gilmore and several other special family members.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Diane Gilmore; brother, Mark Gilmore (Karen); sister-in-law, Jane Harwood; brother-in-law, Kim Gray and several very special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Downtown Kingsport.

A private entombment will take place at East Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Covenant House, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or an organization of your choice.
