Gary Thomas, 63, of Kingsport, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2011 at his home.
Gary was born February 6, 1948 in Kingsport a son of the late William and Faye Thomas. He was a graduate of Holston Institute High School Class of 1967 where he participated in sports, especially track, field, and pole vaulting. He attended the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Drafting Design.
During his college years, Gary worked at Warrior's Path as a lifeguard. Later he worked for Phillip Morris and a surveying company in Pennsylvania. In 1984 he lived in Germany and became a bricklayer, having worked for Atlas, Conco, and Silmar. After 2000, he was a mechanic working on small engine repairs, lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc.
Gary's interests included his love of animals, geology, history, and photography. Gary did his own photography developing and had a dark room at the house across from Regency Park. He traveled extensively, made gourds and enjoyed gardening. He was unable to finish his garden this year.
He was a member of the Moose, Eagles, the VFW Sons of the American Legion and the National Hunting Club.
Gary was very passionate, light spoken, very considerate and kind... never a harsh word to be said. He was grateful to have the few friends and family he had. Gary was also a close relative of the Carter family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Andrea Thomas.
Gary is survived by two brothers, Tommy Thomas and wife Theresa and Bill Thomas, all of Kingsport; and nieces and nephews, Christy Thomas, Tonya Meehan, Adam Thomas, Brandy Thomas, Jonathan Thomas, Rachel Thomas, and Sarah Thomas.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport with services to be held at noon with Minister Shane Smith officiating.
Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bill Thomas, Tommy Thomas, Todd Shipley, Paul King, Mike Palmer, and John Ferguson. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Moore, Lynn Moore, and Jonathan Thomas.
