Gathel Dwain Turner, Sr., 76, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2016, following a brief illness. Gathel was born in Dawson Springs, KY and had resided in Kingsport for most of his life. He was an employee of Holston Defense, retiring after 30 years of service. Gathel was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of New Life Pentecostal Church in Rogersville. Gathel was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shera; parents, Mary Louise and Orville Turner; brother, Norris Turner; and sister, June Boyd.
Gathel is survived by his wife and best friend of 49 years, Geneva Turner of the home; daughter, Gina Barron and husband, John of Kingsport; son, Dwain Turner, Jr. and wife, Alisha of Kingsport; 7 grandchildren, Michaela, Lacey, Nick and Katrina Barron, Calin, Isaiah and Elijah Turner; great-granddaughter, Rylee; brother, Deon Turner and wife, Jeanette; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-7:00 pm at Church of Jesus Christ in Kingsport, 3300 Bloomingdale, Rd. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Raymond Sanders, Rev. Archer Baker, Dwain Turner, Jr., and Rev. Deon Turner officiating.
A graveside service will be conducted on Friday at 1:00 pm at Telford Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by The American Legion, Boone Dam Post 4933.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to the family to assist with funeral expenses.
