Gaye Rivers was born on February 6, 1941, in Dryden, Virginia, to Virgie Lee (Cox) Rivers and Earl Rivers. A proud graduate of Dryden High School, Class of 1958, he was honored as "Mr. Senior" by his classmates. He went on to serve his country in the United States Army as a cryptographer stationed in Japan. Following his military service, Gaye embarked on a successful career as a sales representative for Dictaphone, earning numerous awards and recognition for his dedication and hard work. In 1981, he pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and founded his own company, Ansafone of Tri-Cities.
Gaye grew up in Lee County, Virginia, where he married his lifelong sweetheart and best friend, Juanita (Deaton) Rivers. They exchanged vows on September 29, 1962, at the Dryden United Methodist Church Parsonage and remained inseparable throughout their lives. Together, they built a life filled with love and dedication, tending to their farm in Lee County, where Gaye raised tobacco and cared for cattle and horses. Their journey took them to various homes from West Virginia to East Tennessee before they ultimately settled in their cherished forever home in Kingsport, Tennessee.
A devoted man of faith, Gaye was a beloved and active member of his church. He found immense joy in singing in the choir and participating in church events for as long as he was able. His commitment to his community was evident through his membership in the Holston Ruritan.
Gaye had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found fishing on local waters. His love for sports never waned—whether playing, coaching, or watching baseball and basketball, he was always immersed in the game. He also cherished the time spent playing cards, especially Rook, with family and friends, creating treasured memories along the way.
Gaye was preceded in death by his parents, Virgie and Earl Rivers; his daughter, Teresa Andrade; his brothers, Earl F., Buford, Glen, and Neil; and his sisters, Doris Clark, Pauline Ward, Velma Dobbins, and Ila Mertens.
He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Rivers; his son, Michael Rivers (Michelle); his sisters, Earletta Huff and Shirley Shuler; his brothers, Colin Rivers (Deloris) and James “Jim” Rivers; his grandchildren, Shea Wild, Logan Rivers, Ashley Andrade, and Alex Rivers; and his great-grandchildren, Draven and Ronin.
Gaye will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of love, faith, and dedication will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30am Saturday March 29th, 2025 at Hamlett-Dobson Memorial Park in the Garden of Prayer with Pastor Tony Collins and Pastor Chris Brown officiating.
