Gene Hatley

Gene Hatley, 85, of Kingsport, died Friday, January 14, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Knoxville and raised in Alcoa, Gene had resided in Kingsport most of his life. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and graduated from Hiwassee College. Gene worked for Dobyns-Taylor Hardware and opened and operated Oakwood Hardware before a sales career with Wallace Hardware in Morristown, Mitchel-Powers Hardware in Bristol, and House-Hasson in Knoxville. During his retirement, Gene worked for Lynn Garden Hardware.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mary Elizabeth Hatley; sister, Bessie Dishman; and brothers, Andy, Leech, and Ed Hatley.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy King Hatley, Kingsport; two daughters, Barbara Hatley Jenkins and husband Donald of Maryville, TN, Gina Hatley West and husband Bobby of Birmingham, AL; two sons, Tom Hatley and wife Michelle of Kingsport, Anthony Hatley and wife Krista of Johnson City; nine grandchildren, Cheyenne Trunnell and husband Phil, Sarah Jenkins, Austin Hatley, Caroline Jenkins, Sydney Devinney, Kaelin Hatley, Carson West, Mackenzie West, and Anderson Hatley; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Trunnell and Samuel Trunnell; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. Services will follow at the church with Rev. Jack P. Weikel and Rev. Jack Edwards officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Rev. Mickey Rainwater officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Posts #3/265.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Hatley, Jerry Dishman, Doug Adams, Austin Hatley, Sam King, Stanford King, and Carson West. Honorary pallbearers will be Knights of the Round Table.

Memorials may be given to Hiwassee College, 225 Hiwassee College Drive, Madisonville, TN 37354-4005; Holston United Methodist Home for Children, P. O. Box 188, Greeneville, TN 37664; or the charity of one's choice.
