Gene Mowell, 75, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at his home following a battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, retired from Mason Dixon, and was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. Gene, who had bowled for over fifty years, bowled a perfect 300 in 2005. He was an avid UT sports fan and an avid golfer. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #972 and a member of Little Eagles of Colonial Heights.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Mowell; a brother, Earl Mowell; and a sister, Sue Saito.
He is survived by a daughter, Joraina Clark and husband Bobby of Gray; son, Duane Mowell and wife Brenda of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Bradlee Clark, Justin Clark, Christy Mowell, and Matthew Pendleton; two sisters, Larue Stalker and husband Jim of Seattle, WA and Venita Dowell of Kingsport; three step-daughters, Beverly Hammon, Linda Holt, and Susie Harrison; a step-son, Paul Snapp, Jr.; several step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends among which are, Frank Shanks, Claudette Dezarne, Carmon Richardson, and Rita Kelly.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, and any time at the home. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. John Hackney officiating.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Mowell Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tommy Harrison, Matthew Pendleton, Tommy McGaha, Steve Chandler, Bill Christian, and George Houseright. Frank Shanks, Jim Taylor, Dennis Miller, and Lee White will serve as honorary pallbearers.
