George Washington Bernard

George W. Bernard, 90, died Wednesday evening at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN, after a short illness. He had been living in Chattanooga with his son, Sam D. Bernard, since January 2009.

A native of Kingsport, George attended Dobyns-Bennett High School and served in the US Navy during World War II and Korea. He served as a Boy Scout leader and mentored many young boys. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Kodak after 40 years of service as an engineer and project manager. He enjoyed NASCAR and was the first flagman at Bristol International Raceway. After retirement, he enjoyed yard work with Vena and was recognized for his "Beautification" efforts. He was a life-long member of Kingsport's First Presbyterian Church.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Vena E. Jennings; his parents, C.W. Bernard and Allie M. Hudson; and his siblings, Buck, Beryl, Mary and Ruth.

The family will receive friends at Hamlet Dobson on Saturday, March 6 from 5-8pm. Graveside services will be conducted on Sunday at 3pm at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA.
