George Donald Wilkerson, 76, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday morning, following an extended illness. Don was born in Sneedville, Tennessee and came to Kingsport as a child. He was a graduate of Sullivan High School, class of 1960, where he played football. Don was a member of Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church. He had various hobbies and loved to grow roses. Don was an employee of Eastman, where he worked in the Acid Division, retiring after 37 years due to poor health. He served as a Scout Leader for troop 53 of Long Island for several years. Don was an amateur Archaeologist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Christian Wilkerson, December 7, 2006; parents, Oid and Gertha Wilkerson; and sister, Wanda Sue Wilkerson.
Don is survived by his sister, Joyce Wilkerson Russell of Kingsport; nephew, Rodney Russell and wife Sonia, of Kingsport; great nephew, Joshua Russell and wife Jamie, of Kingsport; great great niece, Eloise Kate Russell; and cousins, Sue Ann Conkin and Wayne Wilkerson.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedisys Hospice for the excellent care they provided for Don over the last several months.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Josh Russell officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Church Hill Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
