George Washington Hickman

George Washington Hickman, 94, of Hawkins County, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008, at Brookhaven Manor after a brief illness.

He was born June 2, 1914, in Hawkins County. George served in the U. S. Coast Guard and was at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. He retired from J. P. Stevens after more than 51 years of service and had attended Liberty Baptist and Freedom Baptist churches.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Estelle Dean Hickman; his parents, Tom and Sarah Hickman; seven sisters, Grace Davis, Irene Johnson, Floy Bailey, Leaner Blankenbeckler, Nellie Reid, Valeria Derrick, and Inez Collins; and one brother, Bob Hickman.

Surviving are his daughter, Judith Hickman Lamb of Mount Carmel; a son, Lynn Hickman and wife Nellie of Church Hill; four granddaughters, Robyn Lamb and fiancé Doug Puckett; Crystal and Chad Salyer and children, Zackery and Cassidy; April and Robert Overbay and children, Jonathan and David; and Vanessa and Jared Ratliff and children Sayler and Lexie; two grandsons, Chris and Heather Hickman and daughter, Ashlyn; and Brian Hickman; step-grandchildren, Jimmy Seal and Elizabeth Seal and son, Hamilton; longtime friend and companion, Lois Lawson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Judith Lamb, and from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Fred Gilreath and Rev. Andy Sensabaugh officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Church Hill Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #3/265. Pallbearers will be Bill Davis, Bob Larkin, Chris Hickman, Brian Hickman, Zackery Lamb, Doug Puckett, Robert Overbay, and Wade Coots. Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Parsons, Chad Salyer, Jared Ratliff, Hamilton Seal, and Jimmy Seal.

The family would like to send a special thanks to Brookhaven Manor, Amedisys Hospice, and especially Linda and Sheila for their excellent care of Dad.
