George Ray Hurd, 75, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born October 3, 1933, in Scott County, Virginia to John Houston Huse Hurd and Virgie Wilson Hurd. He was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and was retired from Quebecor Printing after 44 years. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp from 1956 to 1958. Ray was a loving husband, father and grandfather who had a special place in his heart for his cats.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jones.
Ray is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia Vicars Hurd; daughter, Sandy Smith and husband Greg of Lebanon, VA; granddaughter, Miranda Rhea Smith Welch and husband Jason of Kingsport; grandson, Matthew Lowell Smith and wife Heather of Castlewood, VA; and nieces and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. T. Richard Harris officiating and music by soloist Robin Light.
Burial will follow the funeral at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Military Rites by American Legion Posts 3/265. Pallbearers will be Matthew Smith, Jason Welch, Wayne Hurd, Bob Light, Preston Light, Lloyd Vicars, Jr., and Steve Vicars. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Light and Wesley Light.
