George Russell Owens

George Russell Owens

George Russell Owens, 76, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Holston Manor.

Born in 1935 in Scott County, VA, he moved to Kingsport at an early age and stayed there his whole life, except for military service. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Russell was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Korea. He was a member of the VFW Post 3382 and Post 4933 for 54 years; and a member of the VFW Honor Guard. He was currently the Chaplain for VFW Post 4933 Honor Guard.

He was President of the 440th Signal Battalion Alumni Assn.

Russell retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 42 years in the Research Laboratories, where he was a Senior Team Manager in Research Electronic Services.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ruth Quillen Owens, and a sister, Frankie Owens Hicks.

Surviving are his wife, Margie Booher Owens of the home; daughter, Tracy Cook and her husband Tommy, Kingsport; son, Russell Owens and his wife Leslie, Knoxville; three granddaughters, Kayla Ann Owens and Sarah Mackenzie Owens, Knoxville, and Josey Mae Cook, Kingsport; one uncle, Elliot Armbrister, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; a special niece, Debbie Spivey of Gate City, VA; and a host of cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Garry Eads officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holston View Cemetery with military rites by the Boone Dam VFW Post 4933.

Pallbearers will be Steve Alderson, Greg Gibson, Randy Meade, Nancy Rachel, Sam Pearce and Clay Hardin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Elliot Armbrister, Wayne Armbrister, Crockett Taylor, Ken Edwards, Rodney Bohin, Charlie Hammons, Steve Haynes, Donna Kilgore, Valecia Fillnow and all members of The VFW Honor Guard, Post 4933.
