George Belk Peters, Sr., a native and lifelong resident of Kingsport, TN passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Robert Lynn Peters, Sr. and Mary Belk Peters.
George graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and Davidson College, Davidson, NC, where he was president of the senior class. He was an outstanding athlete in both high school and college and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Davidson College in 1994. He served in the 69th Infantry Division as Lieutenant and met the Russians at the Elbe River.
George was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport for 80 years and served as a Deacon. He worked in the printing and binding business for the Kingsport Press and Southeastern Color Graphics. George had a love of family, sports and singing, and performed with a local band, The Has Beens, for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert Lynn Peters, Jr. and his twin brother, Thomas Landon Peters who was killed in action during World War II.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emily Loftis Peters, Kingsport; three sons, George Belk Peters, Jr. and wife Ann of Spartanburg, SC, Thomas Loftis Peters and wife Mindy of Burnsville, NC, James Barton Peters and wife Donna of Charlotte, NC; and three granddaughters, Amanda, Jessica, and Katie.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsport, TN at 11 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2008 with The Rev. Dr. David A. Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends after the service Friday at the church.
