George Eugene "Gene" Ramey

George Eugene "Gene" Ramey, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief battle with cancer.

Gene was born on May 27, 1929, the third of eleven children of John Wesley and Effie Mae Booker Ramey. He was born in the old log house located on the grounds of the current Allandale Mansion. He attended school at Whitesburg, Rocky Hill and Ross Campground and lived in the Rotherwood area all his life.

Gene worked in road construction for over 45 years, retiring from Byerly Construction. He was a hard worker and enjoyed what he did. He loved the Lord, his family, his church family and friends. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church where he actively served as a trustee, freely giving of his time and talents wherever there was a need as long as his health permitted. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of the "Sunday Lunch Bunch"! He really enjoyed talking to people and reminiscing about the past!

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Matthew Jarrett; five brothers, Howe, Carl, Robert Burgar Mo, Milton, and Jim Ramey; and two sisters, Ruby Hagy and Linda Adkins.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 61 years, Rita Speer Ramey; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Steve Jarrett and Carol and Terry Anderson; grandsons, Rusty Anderson and wife Rebecca, Jared Anderson, and Steven Jarrett; a great-grandson, Braxtyn Anderson; brothers, Willard Ramey and wife Patsy, J.K. Ramey, and Ira Ramey; an aunt, Ruth Watson and husband Ongie "Sarge" of Friendsville, TX; uncle, U.G. Booker, Jr. and wife Frances of West Point, MS; several very special nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Gott and Pastor Dennis Milligan officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
